About the Recipe
This light, fluffy bread is a typical festive bread made by Asians and Caribbeans.
Ingredients
75 ml Milk
10 grams fresh yeast
2 tablespoons of sugar
250 grams of white plain flour
½ teaspoon of salt
½ teaspoon of baking powder
1 tablespoon of liquid vegetable oil
75 grams of plain yogurt
1 small egg
A sprig of parsley / coriander
Preparation
1. In a small sauce pan, warm the milk. Crumble the yeast over the top of it. Add 1 tablespoon of sugar. Set aside in a warm place for 15 minutes until it froths;
2. Sift the plain flour into a mixing bowl. Add the salt and baking powder. Mix well. Add the remaining 1 table spoon of sugar, the milk and yeast mixture, the oil, yogurt and the egg. Knead the dough until it is firm and smooth;
3. Form the dough into a ball. Cover it and leave it in a warm place to rise until it is double in size. This should take about one (1) hour;
4. Grease a baking tin and light the oven to 230°C / Gas Mark 8;
5. Knead the dough again. Add the chopped parsley / coriander;
6. Divide the dough into four (4) pieces. On a floured surface or board, shape to a naan form;
7. Place the naans on the greased baking tin and bake for 8 minutes until the bread is golden brown.
Serve with either a rich chicken or beef stew or alternatively with a dip of your choice
