Travel & Honeymoon: Holidays 2015 Tourism Fair: What's Hot in the Mt. Kenya & Aberdares
If you missed the Holidays 2015 Tourism Fair that was held at the Sarit Expo Centre, Westlands from 18 to 22 March do not worry, as we will be telling you about the amazing wedding, honeymoon and holiday packages on offer throughout the year.
From the Mount Kenya and Aberdares (Nyandarua) Region, we visited the Sagana Getaway Resort. Recently opened, it is located in Murang’a County and is perfect for a couple that wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Here, expect to relax and enjoy all the wonders of nature. You will like the local and international nutritious meals prepared by the chef. The resort has 100 innovatively decorated rooms.
We moved on the Aberdares Safari stand to see what they had to offer the discerning traveler. Treetops, the 80 year old world renowned rustic tree house has been renovated. The lodge is now surrounded by large viewing windows that ensure its visitors get clear sights of the animals as they gather around the watering hole. If you are getting married this year, consider staying in one of the three suites, which are perfectly laid out for honeymoons. Enjoy an intimate breakfast and dinner with your beloved in the newly laid out dining room. Each individual table is now lit by a mini chandelier.
Treetops lies in The Aberdare National Park, originally called “Nyandarua” by the Agikuyu people. They believed that this was one of “Ngai's” (God's) homes. It is located in the Central Highlands west of Mount Kenya, 180 km away from Nairobi. The Aberdares mountain range is the third highest in Kenya. The climate here is cool and cloudy. Frequent rainfall maintains this wild and beautiful moorlands alpine and sub-alpine flora.
This park is rich with wild life including blue and colobus monkeys, leopards, lions, elephants, warthogs, black rhinos, giant forest hogs, bushbucks, buffalos, red duiker, suni, serval, reedbuck eland and rare bongo antelopes.
The bird life here, includes 250 and more recorded species. If you love fishing, the rivers and streams here are stocked with brown and rainbow trout. A sports fishing license can be obtained at the Park Gates, issued by Kenya Wildlife Services.
Go down memory lane and honour our past heroes such as General Dedan Kimathi and the Mau Mau who fought the British for the independence of Kenya. See The Mau Caves and The Kimathi Post Office where agents dropped off messages for the Mau Mau fighters.
On the foothills of Africa’s second highest mountain Mount Kenya (Kirinyaga), sits Naro Moru River Lodge. Although it was built in 1949, this rustic lodge continues to attract both the young and the old who enjoy the challenge of climbing to the highest peaks of “Kirinyaga.”
As a recently married couple, you will be keenly interested in knowing more about your new life partner. What better way to get to know each other than here? Challenge each others resilience at a game of tennis and squash. If you prefer a more leisurely game, see each other to the 18th hole at the nearby Nanyuki Golf Course. Later in the evening, relax to a sumptuous dinner in the Nelion Restaurant. Naro Moru River Lodge offers its visitors 46 bedrooms that range from standard rooms, superior rooms to deluxe cottages complete with fireplaces and balconies.
Naro Moru River Lodge is located in the Mount Kenya National Park, which lies to the east of the Great Rift Valley. According to UNESCO, Mount Kenya is now a World Heritage Site, which is described as one of the most impressive landscapes in Eastern Africa. These landscapes consist of rugged glacier clad summits, afro-alpine moorlands and diverse forests.
The major attractions of the park are its numerous lakes, lagoons, mineral springs, rare and endangered animal species and unique mountain and alpine vegetation of eleven species of common plants.
