A Wedding "Spune" for the Lady You Love

People from all around the world have traditions and customs which all have their own special meanings. Some came about after a meaninful experience during the dating period. This special meaning may also be linked to the way two people met and fell in love.

Did you know that in Scotland, engaged men travelled all the way to Edinburghs metalsmiths where they purchased a silver spoon called a "wedding spune?" Metalsmiths would be requested to engrave the couples initials and wedding date onto them. This spoon would later be presented to the bride as a gift.

If she happens to be a maiden who is good in the kitchen and loves to cook, you as the groom, will be well on your way to winning her heart! She may even be the one special person who will be preparing all your meals till death do thee part!

This tradition dates back to 1667 in Wales. It is a tradition common among Celtic people of Europe. Wooden spoons were originally carved by men as a token of their affection towards a "lass" or "maiden". The lovespoon signified loyalty and faithfulness and showed a wish to be with the recipient of the lovespoon.

During the long cold winter months, young men would carve lovespoons using their own hands from one piece of wood. The more intricate the design, it meant the more he loved her. Come Spring time, he would present the spoon to his intended. If she accepted the gift they would start a romantic relationship. In those days since there was no Sacrament of Matrimony, the couple would move in with each other and start co-habiting.
