Bon Voyage to a Memorable Honeymoon!

Updated: Oct 5, 2022

Whooo Hoooo!! Congratulations! After all the hectic planning of your wedding, it is finally time to take that much deserved rest!

A honeymoon is a special time together and it is the one trip the two of you will remember for a life time. This will be the first get away you take together as a legally married couple. To enjoy it to the maximum, plan your honeymoon carefully.

Will it be a honeymoon at home in Kenya? Will it be a honeymoon abroad? Usually the preserve of the groom, he may decide to surprise you, his new wife or he may choose to let you in on where the two of you will be going.

The first thing to do is to choose the destination you would like to visit. Look through travel magazines, visit wedding planning websites or ask some of your friends about where they went on their honeymoon. Then, sit down and plan a budget of how much you will spend for each activity. For starters, if, for instance, you have budgeted Kshs.2,000,000/= for planning of the entire wedding, set aside 6% or Kshs.120,000/= for the honeymoon. You can use this website (HoneyFund) to get your friends and family to gift you the honeymoon you have always wanted to take.

The second thing you need to do is to look for a reputable, experienced travel agent. They usually work with hotels, lodges and transportation companies and they can come up with a suitable travel plan for the both of you. Travel agents are usually familiar with the local high and low seasons and can even get you seasonal discounts that will help you save money.

If you choose to travel outside the country, a travel agent will walk you through the steps of the documentation and foreign currencies you will need to obtain to ensure a successful trip abroad. To help you seamlessly plan the honeymoon you have always dreamed of, we have worked out a budget, itinerary, checklist and timeline for you. These worksheets are downloadable from or eBook Store.

There is nothing so disconcerting as forgetting to pack all the items you will need on your trip . There is also nothing as disconcerting as packing too much for a two week visit to a local or international location! Plan each day and activity carefully and take just what you need. It is always safe to start packing at least two weeks before your travel date. If you are traveling abroad, make sure you do not exceed the weight allowed for your ticket.

Whether you are traveling locally or going abroad, plan how to use your time well. Take as much rest as you need, but do not forget to visit the sites your location has to offer. It may be a while before you will be able to take such a trip again once you settle down to married life.

A last word of advise. Carry a digital camera with enough memory with you. You will use this to take photographs and videos of all the places and precious moments you will be experiencing on your trip. There will be so many shots the two of you will take together that you do not want to miss!

Once you get back home, invite your closest friends, especially those who were in your wedding party for an afternoon lunch. Afterwards, you can watch the photographs and videos together. (Psst!! Do not forget to edit out the parts that are meant just for the two of you!)
