Dotty Answers Catholic Wedding Bible Reading Questions

Hello there Dorothy

I have been reading your articles for some time now and I have benefited from using some of your Worksheets.

My name is Peter Otieno. I come from Kisumu. My beloved is called Caroline. She is from Kakamega County. We met while we were students at The University of Nairobi. We are planning quite a big wedding to be held here in Nairobi. We are both Catholics.

We write to you inquiring about the best readings from the Bible for our wedding ceremony.

Dear Peter

Thank you for your letter.

As you are both Catholics and this is your first wedding, your ceremony will be easy. I hope that you have visited the Church you have chosen to work out details of your nuptials with the Priest. When you visit him be sure to carry both of your baptism and confirmation certificates; a document from Sheria House indicating you are free to marry, a letter from your home parish indicating you are free to marry and that you have no impediments to receiving the Sacrament of Matrimony.

The Catholic Church requires that each ceremony take place before an authorized person such as a duly ordained Priest or a deacon; the marriage must be witnessed by two adult persons; and it must take place in a registered building i.e. a Church registered for weddings.

The Roman Catholic Church usually chooses readings from The Old Testament for the First Reading; from the New Testament for the Second Reading; from the Psalms for the proclamation and from the Gospel, which will make up the main text for the Homily.

Old Testament Readings are as follows:

1. Genesis 1: verse 26 – 28 – Created in God’s Image

2. Genesis 1: verse 31 – Everything God had made was good

3. Genesis 2: verse 18 – 24 – God creates a suitable companion for Adam;

4. Tobit 7: verse 6 – 14 – Sarah is betrothed to Tobias

5. Tobit 8: verse 4 – 8 – Sarah and Tobias pray together

6. Proverbs 18: 22 – A good wife is goodness

7. Ecclesiastics 26: 2; 3; 16; 19; 21; 23; – A good wife delights her husband

8. Jeremiah 31: verse 31 – 34 – The Lord will write The Law in their hearts

Psalms

1. 112 – Praise the Lord

2. 100 – A Hymn of Praise

3. 145 – Sing to the Lord with Joy

New Testament Readings can be chosen from the following books:

1. Romans 8: 31 – 35 – Nothing separates from the Love of Christ

37 – 39 – Nothing separates us from the Love of God

2. Romans 12: 1 – 2 – In the service of the Lord; 9 – 18 – Loving one another at all times

3. First Letter to the Corinthians : 12: 12 – 21 – One body in Christ Jesus

4. Ephesians 5: 2 – Walk in Love; 21 – 33 – Love each other

5. Colossians 3: 12 – 17 – Living in Christ

6. 1 Peter 3: 1 – 9 – Wives submit to your husbands

Gospel Readings are chosen from:

1. Mathew 5: 13 – 16 – Let your light shine before men

I hope these will help you get started on the choice of readings for your nuptial mass.

Best regards
