Updated: Nov 29, 2023

Brides started adding lengths of fabric called trains to the back of their gowns during the medieval times. They did this to draw the attention of the guests who attended the ceremony and reception.

They also added trains to their wedding gowns so as to make a statement of how wealthy they were. The longer the train, the wealthier the family was purported to be. Did you know that Princess Diana worn the longest train at a royal wedding which was 25 feet long?

As a modern bride, you can choose from four styles, depending on the theme of your wedding, whether traditional or contemporary.

1. Royal / Monarch train which extend at least 37 inches from the back hem of the wedding dress. This style of train is often seen in royal, traditional and formal wedding.

2. Cathedral trains are at least 22 inches from the back hem of the wedding dress. They are suitable for traditional, formal weddings. They are suitable for ball-gowns which have fuller, wider skirts.

3. Chapel trains stretch from 12 inches to 18 inches from the back hem of the dress. This length of train is suitable for a ballroom wedding.

4. Sweep trains are six inches longer than the back hem of the bridal gown. These are suitable for informal weddings. They are commonly seen on either slip or sheath style wedding dresses.
