In the Middle Ages Roman wedding guests would break a loaf of wheat bread over the brides head. They would then all eat the crumbs which they believed would bring them good luck.
Later on, the English people adopted this tradition. Wedding guests took small cakes to the wedding. These would be piled in a space where the newly wed couple would later stand. The couple would kiss the cake in the hope that this would bring them fertility and a fulfilling life.
In due course, someone came up with the idea of piling all the cakes together and frosting them into one piece. Thus begun the tradition of the tiered wedding cake we are all too familiar with in our time.
